ٱلْبَلَد

Al-Balad

(The City)

بِسْمِ ٱللَّٰهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful

Surah 90 - Al-Balad - 1

لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ

I swear by this land.
Surah 90 - Al-Balad - 2

وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ

And you are a resident of this land.
Surah 90 - Al-Balad - 3

وَوَالِدٍۢ وَمَا وَلَدَ

And by a father and what he fathered.
Surah 90 - Al-Balad - 4

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ

We created man in distress.
Surah 90 - Al-Balad - 5

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌۭ

Does he think that no one has power over him?
Surah 90 - Al-Balad - 6

يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًۭا لُّبَدًا

He says, “I have used up so much money.”
Surah 90 - Al-Balad - 7

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ

Does he think that no one sees him?
Surah 90 - Al-Balad - 8

أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ

Did We not give him two eyes?
Surah 90 - Al-Balad - 9

وَلِسَانًۭا وَشَفَتَيْنِ

And a tongue, and two lips?
Surah 90 - Al-Balad - 10

وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ

And We showed him the two ways?
Surah 90 - Al-Balad - 11

فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ

But he did not brave the ascent.
Surah 90 - Al-Balad - 12

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ

And what will explain to you what the ascent is?
Surah 90 - Al-Balad - 13

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ

The freeing of a slave.
Surah 90 - Al-Balad - 14

أَوْ إِطْعَـٰمٌۭ فِى يَوْمٍۢ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍۢ

Or the feeding on a day of hunger.
Surah 90 - Al-Balad - 15

يَتِيمًۭا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ

An orphan near of kin.
Surah 90 - Al-Balad - 16

أَوْ مِسْكِينًۭا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍۢ

Or a destitute in the dust.
Surah 90 - Al-Balad - 17

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ

Then he becomes of those who believe, and advise one another to patience, and advise one another to kindness.
Surah 90 - Al-Balad - 18

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ

These are the people of happiness.
Surah 90 - Al-Balad - 19

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ

But as for those who defy Our revelations—these are the people of misery.
Surah 90 - Al-Balad - 20

عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌۭ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ

Upon them is a padlocked Fire.
Summarized notes on Surah Al-Balad

Man is powerless no matter how wealthy he is. God created and blessed man, and guided about good and evil. Attempt the steep ascent - to free slaves, to feed the hungry, orphans, relatives, needy and desperate, to urge others to persevere and to show compassion. Those who succeed at this will be rewarded, unlike the others who will be punished.
